Wessex Archaeology

Wessex Archaeology is a national organisation, carrying out rescue excavations in advance of building developments such as housing estates, roads and currently the HS2 rail development. It is a successful commercial organisation but also a charitable trust whose primary aim is educational. As a result, the support for educational activities is very strong. The Community Engagement team has been developing an outstanding service for schools, drawing on the skills and expertise of the professional archaeologists. Using classic archaeological approaches which study evidence and suggest interpretations, the team has made excellent use of the extensive collections of artefacts to offer an exemplary service based on sound pedagogical principles.
