To enable the public in general and young people in particular to learn about history, art, architecture and other subjects through engagement with historic buildings and sites, museums, landscapes, parks and gardens, cultures and traditions. In particular, the Trust seeks to achieve this through assessment for the Sandford Award and the dissemination of good practice in heritage education.

Heritage Education Trust and the Sandford Award

The Heritage Education Trust plays a central role in supporting high standards of heritage learning across the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man through our flagship programme, the Sandford Award.

The Sandford Award exists to recognise and celebrate heritage sites that go above and beyond in delivering exceptional learning experiences. Through independent, onsite and expert-led assessment, the Award gives teachers and families confidence that the places they visit offer high-quality, engaging, fun, meaningful and inclusive education.

Championing high‑quality, inclusive, and accessible learning in heritage

“For almost 50 years, the Sandford Award has recognised a huge variety of education programmes at hundreds of heritage sites across the British Isles. We are looking forward to building on this success in the years to come by continuing to broaden the reach of the scheme and celebrating many more heritage education heroes.”

– Tracy Borman, OBE, Chief Executive, Heritage Education Trust
