Brunel’s SS Great Britain is an iconic part of Britain’s heritage, its huge, riveted iron hull in the dry dock from which it was launched in 1843, its decks and interiors lovingly restored to their Victorian magnificence. Using archive material including passengers’ letters and journals, the ship has been brought to life by the Trust, with an excellent education service which makes use of the spirit of innovation and experiment of the ship’s original designer. Experiential learning opportunities are offered to schools including designing and planning, building, problem-solving, re-enacting and discussing. Pupils will leave refreshed, inspired and astonished by the achievements not only of our Victorian forebears but of the dedicated people who have restored this magnificent ship.
