Carisbrooke Castle has a long and fascinating history.  Finding ways to engage young children with the long past can be a challenge, but Carisbrooke Castle has discovered an inspirational way to do this.  Water for the Castle was accessed with the use of a wheel which when turned lowered a bucket into the well.  Pupils today can see how donkeys turned the wheel to bring the water to the surface, how the wheel works and how water was essential to the running of the Castle. Using these charming animals in a historically accurate and authentic way brings the past to life in a way children are unlikely to forget.
